BayCare: Transforming Population Health Though New Expansion and Innovation

Founded in 1997, BayCare is a leading not-for-profit health care system that connects individuals and families to a wide range of services at 15 hospitals and hundreds of other convenient locations throughout the Tampa Bay and central Florida regions.

The organization is on the forefront of expansion and innovation to provide the best quality of care for an ever-expanding population. One such example is Baycare’s $308 million renovation of St. Joseph's Hospitals in Tampa, Lutz, and Riverview, Florida, which was announced in December 2017

“At BayCare, we are always evaluating the current and future needs of our community," said Kimberly Guy, President of St. Joseph's Hospital, in a recent press release. “The greater Tampa Bay area continues to be a popular destination and these expansions will allow us to not only meet its rapid population growth but also better serve the medical needs of our neighbors by increasing our medical specialties and services.”

With a robust patient portal and new “HealthHubs,” which offer wellness devices and applications that help patients monitor, manage and improve their health, BayCare is also investing in the future of innovation.

Through a new collaboration, BayCare took this concept one-step-further. In partnership with the YMCA, the organization just launched the first BayCare HealthHub at the James P. Gills Family YMCA in Trinity, Florida. This HealthHub is a telehealth center where Y members and their families, visitors and the community can receive non-urgent medical care from board-certified physicians through video conferencing and medical diagnostic equipment.

Finally, BayCare is one of 39 health systems across the country collaborating with Apple on its health records initiative. The Health Records feature is now available through the health system for patients who have downloaded iOS 11.3 to their phones.

Managing a large care organization on a regional basis is no small challenge, especially in a region where the population (and patients’ needs) continue to grow. BayCare is a prime example of how to best leverage investment into expansion and technology to be on the forefront of providing the best quality of care.
