Why Notarize when you can Optimize your Identity Proofing?

Secure Direct Messaging requires trust between two parties exchanging medical records.  This trust is established with a PKI (Public Key Infrastructure) Digital Certificate. Previously, LOA3 (Level of Assurance 3) in person authentication was required to identify proof an individual attached to the certification. While this process is straightforward, the inconvenience of having identification papers notarized has been a barrier to acquiring a PKI certificate.

For HIT Exchange, Should Your Head be in the Clouds?

With the incentives in recent years for creating digital healthcare data there are more opportunities than ever to share, exchange and use that data in innovative solutions. These solutions have a lot of promise including improving patient care, managing costs, and helping develop new treatments. However, even though the data may be digital, there is still a major barrier. Actually getting to and/or moving the data remain difficult. (Ok I know that the quality/computability of the data can also be an issue but that is a topic for a different time). The problem usually boils down to the fact the data lives in any number of different systems and managed by different organizations. And though there have been standards around healthcare IT for decades, the actual adoption and/or implementation of those standards had been anything but.

IT Guy Bits and Bytes: Options for Securing HL7 Connections

The Health Level-7 (HL7) standard doesn’t include security. When needing to secure HL7 communication it is accomplished using other secure channels. Two common choices are Virtual Private Networks (VPN) and Secure Shell File Transfer Protocol (SFTP).

Data Transport: The Other Component of Interoperability

I was at a recent HIT conference, and noted that several speakers talked about interoperability. What each of them failed to say was that transport is a big barrier. Their interoperability emphasis was on the complexity of payload – the data that will be exchanged - ranging from identifying and matching patients, reconciling coding (LOINC –vs- SNOMED), defining minimal datasets, etc. Each of these speakers failed to mention the other component of interoperability (What is interoperability?).

The Coming Revolution in Health Data — Ubiquity

In 2010 I was diagnosed with kidney cancer.  A bone scan indicated that the cancer may have metastasized to the bone. A surgery was scheduled to remove and biopsy part of a rib in question.  The surgeon was to review the bone scan before surgery, but he didn’t. That information didn’t get to him, and he removed another part of my rib.

2016 Health IT Focus: The Future of Patient-Centered Health

It’s that time again. The cherry blossoms having peaked, the DC metropolitan area is counting down the days until the 17-year Cicadas pop their beady, red eyes out of the ground, and the Office of the National Coordinator (ONC) is hosting their Annual Meeting. This meeting provides an opportunity for an expansive array of public and private sector partners to review and discuss ways to leverage health IT. The goal: to achieve better care, smarter spending, and healthier people.
