It’s no secret that containing healthcare costs in the U.S. is a major challenge, especially for those without employee-sponsored health plans. With extremely high deductibles and monthly premiums, it is difficult for the average family to manage these costs, and keep themselves healthy.
Since 2012, Liberty HealthShare has offered a solution where care costs are shared, and its Christian-based members voluntarily pay for one another’s medical bills.
Members pay healthcare care expenses solely from contributions, and the remaining funds are carried over into the next year to safeguard against a spike in members’ medical expenses.
During 2017, the nonprofit organization provided health care and end of life assistance to over 87,000 families, with over $167 million shared among members.
The way it works is that members contribute a monthly share amount through his or her online ShareBox account. From there, the amount in a member's ShareBox is automatically transferred directly to another member's ShareBox for any eligible medical expense.
Liberty HealthShare contains costs by giving members the tools they need to review the treatment they receive, and they ultimately approve the costs. The organization also helps members find the most ideal providers, and offers discounts on prescriptions, dental, and vision services.
The organization also has a team that advocates on behalf of its members with healthcare providers to keep costs fair. Finally, Liberty HealthShare emphasizes the spiritual principles of wellness, health, and prevention.
With care costs continuing to rise, Liberty HealthShare is a prime example of how healthcare sharing ministries are making major progress in helping keep its members healthy through a community cost-sharing approach.
